چکیده
Background: Malnutrition and pathogenic colonization of the vagina are two major contributors to preterm labor, low newborn survival rates, low birth weight, and in surviving infants, a high risk of long term poor quality of life. It was hypothesized that use of probiotics as a food supplement would improve the appetite and health of the mother and ultimately the health of newborns. Methods: Two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus fermentum RC-14 were tested in a Sprague-Dawley albino rat model. The probiotic preparations (1 ¥ 109 cfu/mL) were administered to 8 rats in group A; the 8 rats in group B, the control group, received 1 mL of sterile bicarbonate buffer containing 2% gluAnukam1-vol5no1 3/5/05 7:24 PM Page 46

Probiotic Lactobacillus dose required to restore and maintain a normal vaginal flora.
Forty-two healthy women were randomized to receive one of three encapsulated Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 plus Lactobacillus fermentum RC-14 probiotic dosage regimens or L. rhamnosus GG by mouth each day for 28 days. However, the vaginal flora, assessed by Nugent scoring, was only normal in 40% of the cases, and 14 patients had asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis. Treatment with L. rhamnosus GR-1/...
متن کاملOral use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14 significantly alters vaginal flora: randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 64 healthy women.
Urogenital infections afflict an estimated one billion people each year. The size of this problem and the increased prevalence of multi-drug resistant pathogens make it imperative that alternative remedies be found. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 64 healthy women given daily oral capsules of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus fermentum RC-14 for 60 days showed no adverse ...

AIMS This study investigates the antagonistic effects of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 against vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC)-causing Candida glabrata. METHODS AND RESULTS Growth inhibitory activities of Lact. rhamnosus GR-1 and Lact. reuteri RC-14 strains against C. glabrata were demonstrated using a spot overlay assay and a plate-based mi...
متن کاملLactobacilli for prevention of urogenital infections: a review.
Urogenital infections are a worldwide shared problem that represent the most common reason for a woman to decide to visit to gynaecologist or urologist. The origin of the uropathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infection and bacterial vaginosis is the fecal flora. Key element of pathogenesis namely the ability of the pathogens to survive exposure to the microflora that exists on the externa...
متن کاملProbiotic Interference of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 with the Opportunistic Fungal Pathogen Candida albicans
Candida albicans is the most important Candida species causing vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). VVC has significant medical and economical impact on women's health and wellbeing. While current antifungal treatment is reasonably effective, supportive and preventive measures such as application of probiotics are required to reduce the incidence of VVC. We investigated the potential of the probioti...
